Hiades shares NELSON’s advances and participates in the Remote Pilotage Days

Publicado el October 6, 2026

The Canarian company participated in the meeting of the consortium of the European project NELSON, organized by Fintraffic, and in the Remote Pilotage Days, promoted by Finnpilot. For four days, the company shared with technological, practical and ship traffic service (VTS) partners the advances of its tools, which it develops as part of the project’s work package 6.

The digitalization of navigation requires pilots, maritime traffic operators, crews and technology developers to work on shared needs. Hyades Business Patterns It participated in two consecutive events: the face-to-face meeting of the European Project Consortium NELSON and the Remote Pilotage Days.

In the first days, the stay combined work sessions between the partners, presentations, demonstrations and a visit to Fintraffic. This agenda made it possible to connect technological development with the expertise of those who manage and supervise maritime operations. The programme included a review of the progress of the work packages, technical workshops, joint test planning and risk analysis. The dynamics facilitated the exchange between the participants and helped to concretize the dependencies between the different lines of the project and the priorities for its next phases.

In addition, Esa Kallio explained to the international delegation the organization and operation of Finland’s maritime traffic control system at the national level. The attendees learned about the work of VTS operators, who provide information to vessels, organize traffic and respond to emerging risks. To do this, they rely on radar and AIS data, cameras and communication tools that allow them to follow the movements of ships.

Héades, a member of the consortium and leader of work package 6, shared the results achieved in his area. Laura Osorio Sánchez, project manager of NELSON’s work package 6 in Hyades., presented a first demonstration of the Passage Plan, the digital maritime route planning tool that the company develops within the framework of NELSON. Its function is to facilitate the planning, validation and exchange of routes between the ship and the shore services. The session made it possible to compare the operation of the tool with the partners and to collect contributions from professionals who know the needs of navigation from complementary perspectives.

During the conference, the demonstrations of the Remote Operation Center of Brighthouse Intelligence allowed this interaction to be observed in a simulation environment in icy conditions. The system combined camera images of the ship, a Pilot Amura with vessel data, speed information and other technical parameters of the Fintraffic, and nautical cartography with bathymetric data.

According to what was stated in the meetings, it is planned to be deployed in Finland and tests will be carried out in Sweden.

The test sessions brought the debate closer to specific questions about the use and presentation of this data as decision support. Beyond gathering information from different sources, the challenge is to make it understandable and accessible to the professionals involved in each operation.

The participation in Helsinki allowed Hiades to collect input for its developments, exchange knowledge with other teams and advance in the coordination of NELSON’s next tasks. The conclusions of these conferences will serve as a reference to continue the technical work and tests planned within the project.
