The days February 27 and March 2, 2026 Two dynamics were held with stakeholders in the offices of Hiades Business Patterns S.L. in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, within the framework of the NELSON project, funded by the programme Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The conference brought together maritime authorities, pilotage organisations, technology developers and representatives of the shipping sector to discuss new digital solutions aimed at improving maritime traffic management and pilotage operations.
The NELSON project It aims to create a harmonised digital environment for the exchange of information between ships and authorities on land, contributing to improving the safety, operational efficiency and sustainability of European maritime transport.
The First Dynamic, held on February 27, meeting in 13 participants from organizations such as the European Maritime Pilots Association (EMPA), Finnpilot, Valencia Pilots, Fred. Olsen Express, the Port Authority of Las Palmas and Fintraffic. The meeting began with a presentation of the project’s objectives and an overview of the digital solutions that are being developed to support pilotage planning, maritime traffic services (VTS) and the exchange of maritime information.
During the day, several digital tools under development were presented, including modules of the Onboard Ship Information Hub, as well as Wheelhouse Poster and Individuals, which digitize key vessel information traditionally contained in documents such as the Wheelhouse Poster and the Pilot Card. The pilots stressed the importance of having standardized information about the vessel before the maneuver, including propulsion characteristics and maneuver behavior.
The Dynamic Risk Management System (DRMS) and the Decision Support Tool (DST), tools to support port authorities and operators of maritime traffic services in assessing navigation risks and decision-making during port operations.
The Second work dynamics Meeting in 10 participants on behalf of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, Valencia Pilots, Fintraffic and Hiades. The meeting focused on the alignment of the actors involved and the discussion of the project’s use cases, with special attention to the relevant operational scenarios for different maritime regions.
This conference reviewed how the proposed solutions could support pilotage planning, route exchange and coordination between ships, ports and coastal services, reinforcing interoperability between systems and actors in the maritime ecosystem.
Together, the dynamics made it possible to identify real operational needs of the maritime sector and to strengthen cooperation between the organisations involved in port traffic management, pilotage services and the digitalisation of maritime transport. The information collected will contribute to the continuous development and future validation of the digital solutions developed within the framework of the NELSON project.
